The Art of Music Teaching
A book which explores the nature of music and how its predominantly aural nature must underpin piano tuition at every stage. The original manuscript is in the archive of Surrey University.
The primary concern is not what is taught, but HOW it is taught. The essential nature of music can be lost in a welter of visual and tactile experiences, and the piano lesson becomes a matter of vision and touch rather than listening and playing from aural sensitivity.
Laura Campbell is the author of Sketching at the Keyboard and Sketches for Improvisation. She taught harmony for many years at the Exeter College of Education and at the Roehampton Institute.
The text was prepared for publication under the auspices of the Dalcroze Society of Great Britain.
